Think you’re good at spotting a liar? The Chameleon is a hilarious party game of bluffing, suspicion and secret identities!
Everyone knows the secret word — except one player. That player is the Chameleon, and their mission is to blend in without getting caught.
Can you uncover the imposter, or will the Chameleon fool everyone?
🎯 The Aim of the Game
Your mission depends on which card you receive:
- 🦎 The Chameleon: Blend in with the other players, avoid being caught and try to figure out the secret word.
- 🔎 Everyone Else: Work out who the Chameleon is without accidentally revealing the secret word!
Players: 3–8
Playing Time: Approximately 15 minutes
🃏 Getting Started
- Place a Topic Card face up in the middle of the table.
- Take enough Code Cards for everyone playing, making sure one is the Chameleon Card.
- Shuffle and deal one card face down to each player.
- Secretly look at your card. Don’t show anyone!
- Roll both dice to determine the secret word.
Everyone with a Code Card uses the dice results to find the secret word on the Topic Card.
The Chameleon doesn’t know which word has been selected!
▶️ How to Play
1. Give a One-Word Clue
Starting with the dealer and continuing clockwise, each player says ONE word related to the secret word.
For example, imagine the secret word is Pizza.
Players might say:
- 🍕 Cheese
- 🍅 Tomato
- 🔥 Oven
- 🇮🇹 Italy
But remember, one player doesn’t know the secret word!
The Chameleon must listen carefully, think quickly and give a convincing clue without revealing their identity.
2. Discuss Your Suspicions
Once everyone has given their clue, it’s time to investigate!
Talk about the clues, question suspicious answers and try to work out who’s bluffing.
- Was someone’s clue too vague?
- Did someone hesitate before answering?
- Did someone give an answer that doesn’t quite fit?
Be careful not to reveal the secret word during your discussion — the Chameleon is listening!
3. Vote for the Chameleon
After discussing, everyone points at the player they think is the Chameleon.
The player with the most votes is accused!
If there’s a tie, the dealer makes the final decision between the tied players.

🔎 You Accuse the Wrong Player
The Chameleon escapes and wins the round!
🦎 You Catch the Chameleon
Not so fast! The Chameleon gets one final chance to guess the secret word.
- Correct Guess: The Chameleon escapes and wins!
- Wrong Guess: The other players win!
With only 3 players, a caught Chameleon gets two guesses instead of one.
⚠️ The Clue Rules
When giving your clue:
- Say only one word.
- Don’t say the secret word itself.
- Don’t give clues that make the answer too obvious.
- Don’t give clues so vague that everyone suspects you.
- Keep your identity secret until the voting is finished!
Top Tip: The best clues are specific enough to prove you know the word, but subtle enough that the Chameleon can’t easily guess it.
🏆 How to Score & Win
Want to play multiple rounds? Use the optional scoring system!
- Chameleon escapes without being caught: Chameleon earns 2 points.
- Chameleon is caught but guesses the secret word: Chameleon earns 1 point.
- Chameleon is caught and guesses incorrectly: All other players earn 2 points each.
The first player to reach 5 points wins!
For a quick game, you can simply play individual rounds without keeping score.
Remember: In The Chameleon, the most suspicious player isn’t always the one who’s lying!
