But before you start wildly turning over every prop and accusing innocent furniture of harbouring elves, let’s talk about where these tiny mischief-makers came from.
🧝♂️ A Brief (and fun) History of the Elf on the Shelf
Unless you’ve been living under a rock — or inside a locked escape room — you’ve probably heard of the Elf on the Shelf. This tradition began in the early 2000s with a children’s book of the same name… and then exploded into a worldwide festive phenomenon faster than Santa can say “Ho ho ho.”
In the original story, Santa sends magical “Scout Elves” to watch over children and report back on their behaviour. Cute, right?
Well… sort of.
You see, these elves move every night, popping up in new locations with a level of enthusiasm unmatched by most adults after 1 December. Some elves fish for Goldfish crackers in the sink. Some zip-line through living rooms. Some leave flour snow angels on benchtops. And some — the truly chaotic ones — end up causing more mess than the children they’re supposed to supervise.
Naturally, we looked at all this elf-related mischief and thought: Perfect. Let’s put them in our escape rooms.
One thing they will not do is help you escape the room. They’ve read the rules. They just choose to ignore them.
