But the story behind the room is inspired by a very real historical conflict: the Cold War.
What Was the Cold War?
The Cold War was a decades-long political and military standoff between the United States and the Soviet Union after World War II. Although the two superpowers never fought each other directly in a full-scale war, the tension between them shaped global politics for nearly half a century.
Historians often mark March 12, 1947 as the official beginning of the Cold War, when Harry S. Truman announced what became known as the Truman Doctrine.
In this landmark speech, President Truman pledged that the United States would support nations threatened by the spread of communism. This policy, known as containment, would guide U.S. foreign policy for decades and firmly established the rivalry between the Western world and the Soviet sphere.
Rising Tensions After World War II
Although World War II ended in 1945 with the Allied victory, cooperation between the United States and the Soviet Union quickly broke down.
Disagreements about the future of Europe intensified as the Soviet Union established communist governments across Eastern Europe. These countries eventually became known as the Eastern Bloc, aligned politically and militarily with Moscow.
In response, Western nations created the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in 1949, a collective defence alliance designed to counter Soviet influence.
The world had effectively divided into two competing spheres:
- The Western bloc, led by the United States
- The Eastern bloc, led by the Soviet Union
The Nuclear Arms Race
One of the most frightening aspects of the Cold War was the rapid development of nuclear weapons.
Both superpowers built massive arsenals of nuclear missiles capable of destroying entire cities. This created a tense situation known as mutually assured destruction—the idea that if one side launched nuclear weapons, the other would retaliate with devastating force.
Throughout the Cold War, secret bunkers, missile silos, and command centres were built around the world to prepare for the possibility of nuclear war.

The Cold War Finally Ends
The Cold War lasted for more than 40 years. Major flashpoints included events such as the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Berlin Wall, and numerous proxy conflicts around the globe.
For the first time in decades, the world stepped back from the constant threat of superpower nuclear confrontation.
The rivalry eventually came to an end in 1991, when the Dissolution of the Soviet Union officially ended the Soviet state and brought the Cold War era to a close. It was remembered world wide with images of people climbing over and dismantling the Berlin wall – a symbol of the East-West divide
