You Can’t Say Umm is a hilarious party game where players race to describe ridiculous word combinations without stumbling over their words. Sounds easy? Just wait until the other team starts ringing the bell!
🎯 The Aim of the Game
Help your team guess as many word combinations as possible without saying “umm”, “err”, “ah” or other forbidden filler sounds!
Players: 4–10
Playing Time: Approximately 15–20 minutes
🃏 Getting Started
- Divide everyone into two teams.
- Place the game board in the middle and put each team’s playing piece at the start.
- Shuffle the word cards and place them into their separate decks.
- Place the bell where the opposing team can easily reach it.
- Choose which team will go first and select someone to be the first Describer.
▶️ How to Play
1. Pick Your Words
The Describer draws cards to create a random two-word combination.
Your job is to describe both words to your teammates without saying the words themselves!
2. Start the Timer!
You have 45 seconds to describe as many word combinations as possible.
Your teammates shout out their guesses while you give clues.
3. Don’t Say Umm!
Here’s the catch — you can’t say “umm”, “err”, “ah” or other forbidden filler sounds!
The opposing team listens carefully, ready to ring the bell whenever you slip up.
🔔 Hear the Bell?
If you say a forbidden sound, the opposing team can ring the bell and earn a point for catching you!
4. Keep Going!
Every correctly guessed word combination earns your team a point.
Keep describing and guessing until the timer runs out.
5. Switch Teams
Once your turn ends, the other team takes over.
Take turns being the Describer so everyone gets a chance to test their speaking skills!
⚡ Watch Out for Extra Rules!
As teams move along the board, additional challenges make the game even harder!
You might have to:
- 🎭 Speak in a funny voice.
- 🔄 Change seats after a correct answer.
- 🚫 Avoid even more forbidden sounds.
- 🤪 Follow ridiculous new instructions while describing your words.
Always follow the extra rules shown on your cards and the game board!

Earn points by:
- Correctly guessing word combinations.
- Catching the opposing team using forbidden sounds.
Move your team’s playing piece along the board as you score.
The first team to reach the finish line wins!
Remember: The moment you start thinking about not saying “umm”, it becomes almost impossible not to say it!
